Mr Nolan

January 2008 (10 years ago) you operated on my hip and gave me a Birmingham Resurfacing Hip Replacement.

This new hip was so successful that only after 6 weeks I was riding a mountain bike and after 5 months I was able to jog.

Before the replacement surgery I was a competitive cyclist and runner representing Great Britain in my age group for Duathlon (run bike run) around the world.

The last Duathlon before the surgery was in 2006, but thanks to you and the operation I was back representing Great Britain in 2009 in Hungary where I came 4th and first Brit in the 65-69 age group and that was only 15 months after surgery.

I carried on representing Great Britain in 2010 and 2014, but in 2015 in Spain, I won a Gold medal in the 70-74 age group competing in the European championships.

In 2016 I came 3rd in the World Duathlon championships.

Very recently I have qualified for both the 2019 European and World Championships in the 75-79 age group taking place in Romania and Spain.

All thanks to you Mr Nolan and the Birmingham replacement hip.

Kind regards, David Gilbert November 2018

To John

I will try to keep this short.

In essence, I cannot believe how much of an improvement my operation has (so far at least) made. For the first time in 20 years my leg is now aligned ‘forward’s’. This alone has stopped my inner quad, inner knee and ankle from aching when I am sitting down or laying down, either on my back or side. I can now walk properly with my left leg, at the same time losing my limp.

I am looking forward to riding my pushbike without my left leg going outward and forcing my ankle to twist too. I am also amazed that I can now (it is tight, but getting more flexibility daily) put my sock and shoe on and cut my toe nails in a normal way. Not only is this a physical improvement, but the positive psychological effect it is having is an absolute bonus too.

Before my op, the ache and pain often dominated my time, especially when I was alone.

Now I walk, looking at my leg in amazement at the difference this has made to me.

Thank you so much for spending your time making my life so much less painful, and so much more pleasurable.

Dear Mr Nolan

It’s now three months since you operated on my left hip to make a perfect pair!  I just wanted to say a big thank you, for the first time in about ten years I do not walk with a limp. I am pain free in both hips and life is good again.

Please thank your colleagues at the Spire who helped me during my stay.

With best wishes

Dear Mr Nolan

It has now been just over two years since I had a left total hip replacement and I wanted you to know how much it has transformed my life.

Before the operation I was in a lot of pain and was restricted in doing any form of activity. As my hip got stronger after the operation (and with the absence of pain) I was able to be so much more active. I was able to walk for several miles and was able to do gentle, low impact exercises. I felt I had a “new lease of life” and with the help of Slimming World I have managed to lose just over 4 stone in weight. I have recently joined a line dancing group and this has helped me keep fit and healthy.

I am extremely grateful that you performed the operation. It has made such a difference to me.

Yours sincerely,

MAB (12th February 2018)

Last year (2017) I had to have both hips replaced due to osteoarthritis.  The first in March, the second in December.

I have been very impressed by the quality of care provided by Mr Nolan and his team on both occasions.  Procedures were explained clearly, carried out professionally and instructions for self care on returning home easy to follow.  I knew who I could contact with any concerns whilst recovering at home but did not need to.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Mr Nolan and Spire Hospital Norwich for hip replacement.  I now walk easily and have been told I look 10 years younger because I am no longer in pain.

Dear Mr Nolan

You performed a replacement hip operation on me last September 8th, 2016.

I am writing to you just to say thank you, and give you an update on
“your work”!

Perfect, is the word which comes to mind. A year on and I have no ill
effects, in fact most of the time I have completely forgotten that I had the
procedure!

I suffer no pain, and even the scar has practically disappeared. As far as I
can tell my legs are the same length, and life has returned to normal.

Thank you to you and all your colleagues for all you did for me.

Kindest regards,

SM (Sept 2017)

Dear Mr Nolan

I am writing to thank you for the superb results from the recent knee replacement surgery you carried out on me.

Prior to the surgery I was concerned about post-op, not the procedure and I a delighted to report that all is far better than I could ever have hoped for, with good movement and little discomfort.

Many thanks for all you have done for me.

Yours sincerely,

John Holliday (June 2017)

The surgery to resurface my left hip was on Monday, 10 July 2006. It’s an easy date to recall. It was the morning after the 2006 FIFA World Cup football final in Berlin – best remembered for the dismissal of France’s Zinedine Zidane for an inexplicable head-butt on Italy’s Marco Materazzi.

Eleven years on, with Zidane and Materazzi long retired, I’m pleased to say my far more modest sporting exploits continue.

I know running 10k in under an hour aged 58 is hardly headline news, but for someone who has always enjoyed physical activity, I’m delighted to still be able to manage it. And, more importantly, any post run twinges are from aching muscles rather than arthritic bones.

Running pain-free is now something I take for granted. 5k, 10k, maybe 12k, four days a week. The only time I remember I have a cobalt-chrome cap attached to the femur is when I pass through airport security.

I took the decision to have the operation after several years of nagging discomfort, and with the encouragement of a former professional footballer I know, who had suffered similar pain towards the end of his playing career and ended up having both hips resurfaced. “Get it done,” he said. “You are the right age. It’ll make such a difference.”

It was good advice. I know from talking to my consultant John Nolan that I would not be running now had I not explored the benefits of the procedure and plumped for surgery.

If I do reflect on what might have been. I wonder how much discomfort I would now be experiencing? Would I be taking pain-killers? How would I be sleeping? What impact would it have had on my day to life? Driving? Coping without sport? There is no doubt my hip resurfacing has enhanced my life. There was a lot in my favour – my age (44) and build (65 kilo). And yes, there is a degree of uncertainty about the future, because who knows how long will it last?

But for 11 years – and happily counting – the resurfacing has added to the quality of my life, for which I shall always be grateful.

When there is so much negativity being voiced about the NHS I thought it important to acknowledge when I have had a really good experience.

After many months of extreme pain, when normal living was becoming extremely difficult, I was offered a hip replacement  at the Norfolk & Norwich.  The team was led by Mr. Nolan and I was operated on the 22nd November and discharged on the 25th November.  Within two days  my life was transformed: I could move freely without pain and embraced activities with enthusiasm.

I just want to acknowledge the skills of the team.

A happy and grateful  patient,

Hi. I just wanted to say what an amazing job (yet again) you have managed to do for my wife. Although she originally suffered from bad swelling, now her knee is as good as her hip (we were amazed with that too). Thank you so much for improving her quality of life!

I am a 58 year old man and for many years of my life I have pursued numerous activities ranging from mountaineering, rock climbing, running, skiing and walking. My commitment to mountain sports and outdoor activities has been intense and in some case extreme. Around 2011-12 at the age of 54, I started to suffer from occasional stiffness in my hip joints after exercise. In 2012-13 x-rays indicated I had degenerative arthritic hips on both sides. The following two years, I gradually experienced worsening, reduction in flexibility and increasing pain in both hips to the point that even walking around the super market was a real effort, eventually cumulating in the need an operation in July 2015.

Initial enquires with various surgeons indicated that it was very rare and considered risky to have both hips replaced at the same time. However, the thought of going through the 3-6 month recovery process twice did not appeal. Being young and fit it seemed a far better option to have one operation and I was willing to take the risks. Fortunately after much research and investigating I was able to secure the attention of John Nolan who is one of leading surgeons willing to carry out a bilateral hip replacement. His courage and competence in bilateral hip replacements was outstanding and I am very grateful for his commitment to operate. I remember the first thing I asked when I woke up from the operation was had both hips been replaced?

After surgery, I did my first gentle hill walk on week 5, first mountain walk around week 10 and I started riding my mountain bike around the same time and swimming around week 12.

Today one year after the operation I am enjoying all the activities I want to do ranging from mountain biking, climbing to ski mountaineering at a high level of intensity. I have stopped running in an attempt to preserve my joints as long as possible.

I would like to say a special thanks to Mr John Nolan, the hospital staff in Norwich and Sonia my wife for all the hard work and support during my recovery period.

Thank you again for very successful surgery and its outcome.
I am not sure if I can express myself well enough to describe my emotions and feelings of gratitude for what you have done to bring me back to normal.

After seven years of struggling with arthritis and near constant pain I nearly forgot what does it mean to walk pain free and without a limp.
Hip replacement surgery performed by Mr Nolan followed by six week recovery period was enough for me to return not only to everyday activities and work but also to more active lifestyle. Now, free of pain and walking stick I am back to life as arthritis was never happened.

At 43, I can again enjoy activities I was not able or keen to do before the surgery due to painful hip. My 8 year old daughter who did not remember me not limping called my recovery ‘magic’.
I owe Mr Nolan and his team not only ‘Big Thanks’ but my normal life back!”

My Greatest Regards,

It is now six weeks since I had a total hip replacement and I have yet to stop smiling!
From my first consultation it has been a wholly positive experience. Any worries I had came to nothing as the caring professionalism and expertise of Mr Nolan and his amazing team made the procedure comfortable and anxiety free.
I am now able to enjoy walking without a stick, without a limp and best of all without pain.
Thank you.

I would like to thank Mr. Nolan for his skill, dedication and professional care.  At the age of 57 a total hip replacement seemed unlikely but after six years of increasing pain I now have a quality of life and freedom of movement which I didn’t think would be possible.  Mr. Nolan and his team were wonderful and I am truly grateful for their kindness, skill and care.

I was born in 1948

At the age of two I was taken to Hackney Road Children’s Hospital where it was discovered I had a dislocated hip. I was put in plaster and after several weeks was sent home in an abduction splint. After this treatment I was left with a limp and in considerable pain which dogged my life until recently.

I went to see Mr Mark Bowditch at the Nuffield Hospital Ipswich, who had helped me in the past and although an excellent knee surgeon he told me that he would not tackle my complicated hip and I must make sure I found the right surgeon for the job he then referred me to Mr John Nolan. His passing shot was “and you will like him”.

Well I met you in 2015 and Mr Mark B was absolutely right you are an extremely nice man, who gave me the confidence and hope that you could dramatically improve my life and in August that year you did just that. After a three hour operation you turned me into a new woman. After 65 years of pain and struggle I can honestly say I’m completely free of any pain in my hip I can walk for miles swim, ride a bike and enjoy the outdoor life which I love.

I’ve just taken up “wild camping ” which my children are horrified about but my grandchildren think I’m the” trendiest granny ever” and love joining me on my expeditions.

In many ways I’ve been a very lucky woman and now, thanks to you I’m looking forward to a pain free life and growing old disgracefully.

Once again Mr Nolan many thanks for all you have done for me.

My good wishes to you and your family.

Dear Mr Nolan
I feel I must write to say a very big thank you for the treatment I have received from you and your team at the Spire Norwich. I called you Mr Miracle Man when I met with you yesterday and I can honestly say I believe you performed a miracle when you replaced my right hip on August 15th. After only six weeks my new hip has given me the ability to walk without pain and enjoy my life again.
Please thank your team from the porters to the nurses to the anaesthetist , Dr Barker and particularly yourself for my excellent care.
Kind regards

I had so many sleepless nights not only with pain, but also with lots of anxieties about my forthcoming hospital stay to have a hip replacement.  Having been so very lucky and never had to stay in hospital before, my list of worries was endless from sitting on a commode to having a cannula in my hand.  The actual hip replacement was probably last on my list as I knew I would be asleep and not aware of what was being done.

I had such tremendous support and reassurance from Mr Nolan and all the nursing Team at the Spire Hospital that everything would be OK.  The moment I woke up from my operation I was free from pain at last.  This was such an amazing feeling having had pain and feeling suppressed from taking constant pain killers for quite some time.  I know at the time I really did not believe people when they told me that this experience would be the best thing ever and I would feel so much better. When I reflect back on this amazing incredible journey over these last 7 weeks there is one thing that I would like to do and that is to reassure others that may have these same feelings that it is a pure waste of total unnecessary worry and energy! The words “Thank You” will never be enough for me to say to Mr Nolan for his skill in giving me a pain free and mobile future.

I am doing amazingly well and looking forward to returning to work on Monday.

Don’t forget to train someone well for 20 years’ time!  Thank you again for everything!

Kindest regards

Dear Mr Nolan,

I write to convey my sincere thanks to you and your team, following my bilateral hip replacement of 12th January 2016.
Being relatively young for the procedure at 46 and afflicted with the male gene, I have to say I had been somewhat trepidatious!
However, it has now been seven weeks since the surgery and I am delighted to advise that my hips have never felt better. In addition, my recovery has proven far easier than I expected with very little discomfort, which is surely reflective of your and your team’s professional efforts.
From our first consultation back in 2013 through to seeing you on the day of the surgery you consistently managed my concerns and put me at ease. I feel very fortunate to have been referred to your care by a good friend, who coincidentally is also a Consultant at the Hospital.
The entire NHS ‘journey’ from start to finish has been fantastic. Hip, hip hooray!

Best wishes,

Dan Bowyer

Dear Mr Nolan

Cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End over 12 days in August 2015.

I just wanted to drop you a quick line because I thought you may be interested to know that I have now completed the above ride; 950 miles in 12 days! Not bad for someone who has one of your fantastic hip replacements and who found it difficult to walk a few years ago!
I think this is testament to the wonderful work that you do; my new hip has certainly given me a new lease of life – thank you!

Best Regards

Richard Plume (August 2015)

Dear Mr Nolan,

I wish to give you a long overdue thank you.
This week, seeing you for my 12 year anniversary check up for my hip replacement, made me appreciate how lucky I have been to be in your care. Since my first visit with you 12 years ago, you have always been – kind, considerate, professional and realistic.
I have always felt comfortable in your care, your explanation of my needs, options, and expectations always put me at ease.
Your care and aftercare was paramount to the success of this operation, and the fact that the hip replacement is as good as new, 12 years later – is testament to that.
I have only the highest recommendations for you, and thank you for going above and beyond in your care.

Sincerely,

Rosanna Motta (August 2015)

Dear Mr Nolan,
Just a brief note of thanks to you and your team for my recent replacement hip operation on 5th October at Spire Hospital. Six weeks on from the operation, and I could never have imagined I’d be saying this, but the whole process was amazing and a very good experience and outcome.Having had no medical intervention, or experience of hospitals beyond giving birth to my children, I was frankly petrified at the prospect of a major operation as I approach my 70th birthday! Looking back now, I don’t know what I was worried about, as the reality was infinitely better than what I imagined! You and your team were amazing; from the booking in nurse, ward staff, anaesthetist and theatre staff, right through to the physiotherapists and your personal follow up. Everybody was reassuring, supportive and hugely professional. Throughout the six weeks I have been pain free and I’m now driving my car again and about to start digging my garden, where the first task is to plant 400 Spring bulbs!

Thank you once again for the amazing experience and the new lease of active life you have given me.

With kind regards,

Rosemary Back (November 2015)

I have recently been to see Mr Nolan for a check up after my double hip operation seven years ago.
I was very lucky as I was advised to see Mr Nolan by a very good friend, and I will always be thankful of that recommendation.
In short to much football, rugby, running around like an idiot, being knocked off my bike and perhaps a couple of faulty genes meant that I needed a double hip replacement at the age of forty two.
I was under Mr Nolan’s watch for a few years prior to his advice “that now is the best time”.
I was in hospital for for only three days left under my own steam (walking), my recovery from the operation was very rapid and since the operation my quality of life has been superb.
Myself and a work colleague regularly cycle home from work twice a week (28 miles each time).
On a recent holiday I actually bent down to put sun tan lotion on my feet – a feat I have not done for a great number of years, so after seven years my new hips are getting better & better.

Stephen Capps-Jenner (September 2015)

Dear Mr Nolan

You have given me great quality of life over the past ten years after replacing my worn out hips. My heartfelt thanks to you and your team for looking after me so well, giving me reassurance, confidence and good advice to carry on for the next ten years at least!

I wish you every success in the future with the wonderful work that you do and the thousands of people you make happy.

Yours sincerely,

JD (September 2015)

Dear Mr Nolan

I was delighted to see the article in the EDP last week about your continued good work on hip replacement.
It reminded me to look up the date of the occasion when you replaced my right hip. I found, to my surprise, that it was 19th of May 2003 – over twelve years ago.
I was told at the time by somebody that the new hip would last “about ten years”. Perhaps I should not mention the subject now. That might disturb my peace but over the last twelve years I have not had any problem with the hip.
I no longer play golf but that’s a matter of my last companion having given up. However I am still enjoying a weekly game of tennis – and nobody has complained so far.

Thank you. Keep up the good work. I may need to come back one day – if only for the other hip.

Yours sincerely

Eddie Ray (August 2015)

I am indebted to Mr Nolan who performed a bi-lateral hip replacement on me in 2006. As a result of being born with (clicky hips- medical term) and leading an active fitness regime, by my early forties my hips had degenerated and I was in a state of constant pain that had escalated to almost incapacity. An x-ray showed that I had the hips of a 75 year old!
I was reassured to meet an old friend of mine just before my operation who had worked with him as a theatre nurse; she said he was fastidious about cleanliness and meticulous during the operation process
The operation was a great success, I was almost instantly relieved of the pain that had become quite unbearable and a good degree of movement was restored.
I now lead a sensible, moderately active lifestyle and am able to play golf and continue my work as a professional artist.

Mr Nolan was always optimistic and forthright about the possible outcome and a recent x-ray and check up revealed they are still in a good state of restoration 9 years later

Thank you Mr Nolan.

Susan Gunn (2015)

Dear Mr Nolan

This is just to say thank you for the excellent treatment you have given me over the last few months. I’m very grateful to have been able to have your expert attention on my hip, which is very much appreciated

All very good wishes to you
